Maja White was promoted to professor of theatre & dance. She is a lighting and sound designer and has designed lighting for opera, theatre, and dance nationally and internationally. Her research falls in the study of how sustainable equipment and the evolution of technologies are changing the aesthetic of the live entertainment industry. 

Emmy Weldon, assistant professor of theatre & dance, received the Bonnor Foundation Spirit of Ubuntu Award, given to individuals who embody the spirit of community engagement.

Alicia Díaz, associate professor of dance, reflects on the MAPA dance project in “Excavando juntas en el paraíso,” in categoría cinco. The collaborative performance took place in the ruins of the Cine Paradise, a former movie theater in downtown Río Piedras, Puerto Rico.

Anne Norman Van Gelder was promoted to senior teaching faculty of theatre & dance. Her specialties include dance history, choreography, and ballet and pointe technique.

Patricia Herrera, professor of theatre and dance, was elected president of the American Society for Theatre Research (ASTR) for a three-year term.

Patricia Herrera, professor of theatre and dance, and Mariela Méndez, associate professor of Latin American, Latino, and Iberian Studies, published the chapter “Cuir/Queer Afro-Cuban and Xicanx Transnational Encounters: Debora Kuetzpal Vasquez's Dualidad: Todas las partes de mi ser" in the volume Bodies on the Front Line: Performance, Gender, and Sexuality in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Patricia Herrera was promoted to professor of theatre and dance. Dr. Herrera's research explores the social inequities experienced by underrepresented communities, specifically as it relates to Latinx and African American diasporic communities as well as LGBTQ+ people of color.

Patricia Herrera, associate professor of theatre, published Nuyorican Feminist Performance From the Café to Hip Hop Theater University of Michigan Press.

Alicia Díaz, associate professor of dance, debuted Entre Puerto Rico y Richmond: Bridging Stories of Resistance, a mixed media installation that includes a dance film, altars, and an image board contextualizing the colonial relationship between Puerto Rico and the US, at the Institute for Contemporary Art.

Patricia Herrera, associate professor of theatre, published Nuyorican Feminist Performance: From The Café to Hip Hop Theater (Michigan University Press). Nuyorican Feminist Performance examines the contributions of 1970s and ‘80s performeras and how they challenged the Café’s gender politics.

Patricia Herrera, associate professor of theatre, and Mariela Méndez, associate professor of LALIS and WGSS, published an “Performando un activismo feminista: El trabajo de Debora Kuetzpal Vasquez en La Marca” in Conjunto.
